LONGVIEW, Wash. — Zack Filby became the first and only Walla Walla Sweet to get a far as second base when he doubled with one out in the top of the ninth inning against Cowltiz relief pitcher Marty Maves.

Black Bears starter Zach Heaton had left after seven innings, having faced only one batter above the minimum, and with a 12-0 lead.

Behind Heaton and a six-run Cowlitz fourth inning, the Black Bears ended up handing the Sweets a 13-0 loss in their West Coast League baseball series opener here on Monday.

The Sweets (27-25 record) look to bounce back tonight at 6:35 p.m.

On Monday, Heaton limited the Sweets to three scattered singles over seven innings while chalking up four strikeouts without a walk.

The six-run Cowlitz fourth, meanwhile, was highlighted by five consecutive RBI hits — each of the first four with the bases loaded — and all with no outs.

Cowlitz ended up sending 11 batters to the plate in the fourth.

The Black Bears then upped their lead to 10-0 with a sixth inning that included a two-run homer by Tony Boetto, and added two more runs in the seventh and another in the eighth.

Walla Walla finished with five hits — singles from Tate Soderstrom in the third inning, Ryan Johnston in the fourth, Patrick Caulfield in the seventh and Ben Farris in the eighth.

The game was scoreless when Soderstrom and Johnston each singled to lead off their respective innings. But Soderstrom was erased on a putout by Cowlitz second baseman Jonathan Hodo, and Johnston was caught trying to steal second.

Walla Walla then trailed, 12-0, when Farris greeted Cowlitz reliever Kyler Bush with a single to lead off the eighth. But he was erased on a doubleplay line out.

The Sweets finally put somebody on second base when Filby doubled with one down in the top of the ninth, and then Johnston walked, but they stayed put as the game ended on back-to-back flyouts.
