The Walla Walla Sweets routed the River City A’s, 14-1, in a non-league baseball matchup here at Borleske Stadium on Saturday night.
The Sweets are off Sunday, West Coast League All-Star festivities set to begin on Monday in Port Angeles with the first-ever Saltwater Splashdown starting at 6:35 p.m.
Rather than blasting baseballs over the fence, in a ballpark, home run derby participants will blast away from a raised platform at Hollywood Beach over a rope connected to anchors more than 300 feet offshore in the Port Angeles Harbor.
The All-Star Game will take place on Tuesday, starting at 6:35 p.m. with the Sweets represented on the South squad by infielder Nick Nyquist, outfielder Cesar Lopez as well as pitcher Darius Vines and Zack Penrod.
The Sweets then return to action on Wednesday at Borleske Stadium, the first pitch set for 6:35 p.m., as they open a three-game series with Bellingham.
Sweets starting pitcher Ty Hueckman dominated River City for five innings on Saturday, limiting the A’s to one hit and chalking up seven strikeouts.
Hueckman started the game with four almost perfect innings — the only blemish a walk in the first — until Trent Sellers singled with two down in the top of the fifth.
Nick Bonnington then walked to give River City two on, but Hueckman fanned Wa-Hi grad Connor Lemma to keep the A’s scoreless.
Hueckman had already spent most of the night working with Walla Walla ahead on the scoreboard.
Ben Farris gave the Sweets a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, when he homered with two outs and former Wa-Hi player Mitch Lesmeister aboard on a lead-off single.
The Sweets added three more runs in the fourth inning.
Former Walla Walla Community College infielder Josh Kutzke got the Sweets started with a single, advanced to third on an Isaak Gutierrez, and scored on a wild pitch.
River City then managed to record a couple of outs, but before the inning ended, Lesmeister would double home
A Matt Elser two-bagger brought in Lesmeister to make it a 5-0 game.
The rout was on.
A four-run fifth inning saw Kutzke smash a two-run homer, on the heels of a Tyson Quolas lead-off single, increasing their lead to 7-0.
River City removed its starting pitcher with one out in the fifth, but found little relief as Elser singled home another run.
A bases-loaded walk put Walla Walla up, 9-0, and Hueckman turned the mound over to the bullpen.
