KELOWNA, British Columbia — Rain here on Friday forced the Walla Walla Sweets and Kelowna Falcons to play a West Coast League baseball doubleheader on Saturday.
The Sweets lost both games, 3-2.
Kelowna had already taken a 3-0 lead in the first game before the Sweets were able to get on the board with Brock Ephan hitting a home run to lead off the fifth inning.
Down to a final chance with each game of the doubleheader lasting only seven innings, the Sweets would fall a run short despite loading the bases with no outs in the seventh.
Chazz Martinez singled to lead things off, went to third as Justin Folz and Ephan worked back-to-back walks, and then scored on a fielder’s choice.
But the Sweets wound up leaving the bases loaded.
David James Le Bioda put Walla Walla ahead in the second game, homering with the bases empty and one out in the top of the second inning for a 1-0 lead.
The Sweets added another run in the third inning when Ben Farris worked a base on balls, took second on a wild pitch, third on an error with one out, tagged up and scored on a Folz sacrifice fly to center field.
Sweets starting pitcher Ty Hueckman nursed the 2-0 lead through five innings, shutting Kelowna out on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
But when Hueckman left after the fifth inning, Kelowna turned the game around.
Kelowna scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, and then finished off the Sweets in the seventh to complete a doubleheader sweep.
The Sweets had a potential tying run in scoring position with only one down after Patrick Caulfield was hit by a pitch and then stole second base, but a line out and then a stikeout ended the game.
The Sweets (17-9 record) look to salvage a win here Sunday, the first pitch at 6:05 p.m.
