LONGVIEW, Wash. — Nick Nyquist doubled twice as he went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in for the Walla Walla Sweets, and teammate Jordan Hovey homered to put them ahead for good in the sixth inning as they picked up a 5-3 victory over the Cowlitz Black Bears in West Coast League baseball action here on Tuesday.
Walla Walla pitchers Will Blackburn, Samuel Reed and Jack Filby, together, overcame five Sweets fielding errors in limiting Cowlitz to three runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks.
The Sweets (28-25 overall record) bounced back from a 13-0 loss here on Monday, and can win the final series of the season here tonight as they close out the 2018 campaign with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Errors plagued both Walla Walla and Cowlitz on Tuesday.
Nyquist may have given Walla Walla the first run of the day, doubling home Tyler Pritchard with two outs in the top of the third inning, but he also took third base on a throwing error by Cowlitz left fielder Austin Bell and then dashed home on a wild pitch to make it a 2-0 lead.
That was short-lived, however, as the Black Bears came back to tie things up with the aid of two Walla Walla errors in the bottom of the fourth.
Then an error by Cowlitz third baseman Andres Sosa with two outs in the top of the fifth inning, putting Patrick Caulfield on for Walla Walla, left the door open for another Nyquist RBI double that made it a 3-2 game.
But Cowlitz evened the score again in the bottom of the fifth when Dalton Mitchell worked a lead-off walk, advanced all the way to third base on a botched pickoff attempt, and then scored on a groundout.
After that, Cowlitz didn’t score again.
Meanwhile, Hovey put the Sweets back on top by launching a 3-1 offering over the right-field fence with one out in the top of the sixth inning.
The Sweets added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning as Cesar Lopez hit a leadoff single, took second base on another Bell error, went to third on a Hovey single and then scored on a Matt Elser sacrifice fly.
