PORT ANGELES, Wash. — Walla Walla Sweets All-Star Cesar Lopez smacked a game-tying solo home run shot in the fifth inning of the West Coast League All-Star game at Civic Field here on Tuesday.
But ultimately the North pulled out a 10-6 victory over Lopez’s South squad.
Yakima Valley’s Chase Farrell contributed a clean eighth inning, fanning the first two batters he faced, to help the North to victory.
Farrell joined three other pitchers who held the South to one run over the final four frames, allowing the North’s offense to pull away from a 5-5 tie.
Wenatchee’s Mason Morenco and Port Angeles’ Jason Dicochea produced back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth to break the 5-5 tie for the North.
After spotting the North a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, the South rallied behind Bend’s Collin Runge’s three-run home run in the second.
Lopez represented the Walla Walla Sweets with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI. He singled in the second inning, and scored on the Runge homer, singled again in the third, and then launched a solo homer in the fifth.
Sweets teammate Nick Nyquist, meanwhile, went hitless, and fellow Sweet Zach Penrod pitched the eighth inning in relief. The left-hander was charged with two runs on one hit and three walks while recording a strikeout.
The Sweets are back in action tonight at Borleske Stadium, opening a three-game series with the Bellingham Bells at 6:35 p.m.
