SPOKANE — The Walla Walla Bruins opened the Northside Clash with back-to-back wins in American Legion baseball action here at Mt. Spokane High School on Saturday.

A four-run bottom of the sixth inning in the first game lifted Walla Walla to a 7-5 comeback win over the Lewis and Clark Tigers.

The Bruins had trailed Lewis and Clark by as much as 5-2 before Joe Terry hit a bases-empty home run in the fifth inning.

Bruins coach Jason Parsons credited Terry for turning the game around.

“(Terry) gave us a huge lift,” Parsons said. “His solo home run ignited us.”

Still trailing by a couple of runs, the Bruins loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back-to-back singles by Will Kytola, Jake Rose and a Dillon Fowler drag bunt.

Lewis and Clark then traded a run for an out, as Kytola scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Ethan Zehner.

But the Bruins were far from done.

Casey Swanson singled home Rose and Fowler for a 6-5 lead, stole second base, and added an insurance run on a Hunter Polley hit to right field.

“It was that Joe Terry solo home run than really ignited us,” Parsons said.

Ian Kopf then went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four runs batted in as Walla Walla finished the day with a 13-6 rout of the Mt. Spokane Wild.

Action stopped after the fifth inning due to lightning, but not before the Bruins had used several big rallies to take control.

Mt. Spokane had a 2-1 lead before the Bruins tallied three runs in the top of the third inning.

Four more Walla Walla runs in the fourth made it an 8-2 game.

Mt. Spokane would get as close as 8-6, but the Bruins answered with a five-run top of the fifth.

Kopf lead the charge.

“Needless to say, he is really hot,” Parsons said.

The Bruins (5-6 record) are back at it bright and early Sunday morning, taking on the Pullman Posse at 8 a.m.

In addition to Mt. Spokane High, tournament games here have also been played at Gonzaga Prep and Mead.
