SPOKANE — Pomeroy’s softball team defeated both Selkirk and Inchelium in Class 1B district tournament play here on Saturday to earn a third-place seed to the state tournament.

The Pirates tallied 10 hits in the 8-2 win over Selkirk, and 12 in an 18-10 win over Inchelium.

The Pirates opened the day with two runs in the both the first and second innings to grab a 4-0 lead over Rangers.

Selkirk pulled within 4-2 in teh third, but the Pirates added two more in the fourth, one in the fifth and another in the seventh for the final margin of victory.

“This was a very important game and I am happy that the girls hit the ball well,” Pomeroy coach Jessica Nelson said. “A few too many errors, but we can work on it and clean it up for state.”

In the second game, the Hornets tagged Pomeroy for four first-inning runs, only to see the Pirates answer with five in the second.

Inchelium tied it up in the bottom of the second, and plated three more in the third for an 8-5 lead.

Pomeroy scored four, three, two and four in the next four innings to outdistance the Hornets.

“This game was a battle of the bats,” Nelson said. “It was a great way to roll into state.”

The Pirates open state quarterfinal play at 1 p.m. on Friday against Quilcene at the Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima.
