TOUCHET — Touchet’s Issac Gutierrez’s game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds fell short in the Indians’ gym on Tuesday night, leaving Liberty Christian with a 52-49 non-league victory.
The teams played to a 24-all halftime time, and the game was a barn-burner through the second half, leading to the final try to tie it up by the Indians.
Despite the Patriots being much bigger than Touchet, the Indians still found a way to compete with scrappy play, forcing turnovers and hitting big 3s throughout the game.
“My kids played hard, I told them that size doesn’t matter, and they left it all on the floor tonight,” Touchet coach Tim McKeown said. “I’m proud of them.”
The Indians had three players in double figures. Omar Martinez led the way for Touchet with 17 points (including four 3s), Dominic Preciado had 12 and Zac Jaggar had 11.
“Issac Gutierrez played really good defense coming off the bench,” McKeown said. “He was sick yesterday (on Monday), that’s why he came off the bench. I think he was a bit of a spark for me.
“Omar Martinez hit some shots there in the second half... right off the bat he nailed a 3 and you see his confidence really showed after that,” he said.
“My whole team played hard, I’m proud of them... Liberty Christian earned this one.”
Touchet looks to bounce back on Friday, when the Indians head to Prescott for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
