TOUCHET — Colton ruined Touchet’s last reasonable chance at a regular-season volleyball victory here Tuesday night.
After dropping the opening set 25-16, the visiting Wildcats dominated the Indians 25-7, 25-16, 25-13 to run their season record to 8-6 and level their Southeast 1B League tab at 5-5. Touchet slipped to 3-8 in league play and 5-10 overall with just one regular-season.
With postseason play beyond their grasp, the Indians will wrap up the 2018 season on Tuesday at Oakesdale. The Nighthawks will be coming off a five-set victory at Pomeroy Thursday that enabled Oakesdale to clinch the league championship with an 11-0 record, 22-2 overall.
Colton has a pair of regular-season matches remaining, at home to Garfield-Palouse Tuesday and at Prescott Thursday. Victories in both would give the Wildcats a share of third place in the final league standings with St. John-Endicott-Lacrosse, which has already completed league play with a 7-5 record.
The best Touchet can do is place fifth.
“They are only taking four teams to district this year, and we’re fifth,” Touchet coach Mim Jaggar said. “Last year they took five, but this year it’s just four.”
Madisyn Gallaher recorded seven kills and Ashley Luna put up eight assists to lead the Indians Thursday night. Areli Orozco led with 12 digs and Luna and Emily Skramstad added two serving aces each.
“I was very pleased with how the girls played,” Jaggar said. “They were aggressive with their attacks.
“However,” Jaggar added, “Colton defended the court well.”
