AUSTIN, Texas — A pair of local former high school stars competed at the NCAA National Track and Field Championships here over the weekend.
College Place High grad Kenneth Rooks, a two-time WIAA 1A cross country champion and 1,600-meter state title winner for the Hawks, ran for Brigham Young University in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday.
Rooks, a freshman at BYU, finished in 11th place, and was named second-team All-American.
And Walla Walla High graduate Mitchell Jacobson, a sophomore at Washington State University, won the state 4A high jump championship while with the Blue Devils.
Jacobson placed 19th at the NCAA Division I meet with a high jump of 7 feet, one-half inch.
He received All-American honorable mention honors.
