MOSES LAKE, Wash. — DeSales ended its softball season with a pair of losses at the District 5-6 Tournament here on Saturday.
The Irish (11-9 record) started the day with a 16-6 loss to Lake Roosevelt, before Tonasket handed them a season-ending 18-7 defeat.
“We had earned a 4 seed into the tournament by placing fourth at the EWAC League Tournament,” Irish coach Russ Vera said. “Five out of the eight teams today had a chance to earn a berth to state.”
“In the first game, we faced Lake Roosevelt, the No. 1 seed from District 6,” Vera said. “The girls played pretty good against Lake Roosevelt, but in the second inning, we just couldn’t get the outs when we needed to,
“LR hit the ball very well and kept putting pressure on our defense,” Vera said. “Lake Roosevelt was probably the best all around team we faced all year, and they really showed it today.
“When your opponent gets 17 hits and we only were able to get eight, it will be very hard for any team to win a game,” Vera said. “But the girls never gave up.
“In the second game, which was a loser-out game, we faced Tonasket who earlier lost to Dayton,” Vera said. “Tonasket came out and hit the ball well, and again we faced another good hitting team.
“After two innings, we were down 10 runs,” Vera said. “But my girls hung in there, and cut the lead in half in the top of the third.
“In the fifth, Tonasket put up another five runs, and we were only able to put one across,” Vera said. “My girls fought until the end and never gave up but we just never got a good rally going.
“This loss ended the season and the end for my two seniors, Emily Hamada and Josie Kjeldgaard,” Vera said. “This was Emily’s fifth year playing on the varsity team — we pulled her up as a eighth grader — and this was Josie’s second year on varsity.
“It was sad to see the season end, but last year we only won three league games,” Vera said. “And this year we won 11 league games, a huge improvement for all of the players.
“All of the coaches were very proud of how hard our players fought until the end and never gave up.”
