ORANGE, Calif. — Whitman College’s most memorable baseball season in decades came to a close here Sunday as Chapman University escaped with a 3-2 victory over the Blues in the fifth and deciding game of their best-of-five NCAA Division III regional playoff series.

Pitching usually makes or breaks a baseball team in a short series, and Whitman College coach Brian Kitamura views pitching to be Chapman University’s strength this weekend when the Blues and the Panthers tangle in the NCAA Division III regionals in Orange, Calif.
