SPOKANE — The Walla Walla Bruins completed an unbeaten run at the Northwest Clash summer baseball tournament here Sunday with three more victories that pushed their season record above the .500 mark for the first time this season.
After a pair of hard-earned victories over Lewis and Clark and Mount Spokane to begin tournament play on Saturday, the Bruins took down Pullman, Gonzaga Prep and Pullman again in the championship game late Sunday afternoon to raise their record to 8-6.
Pitching was the Walla Wallans’ winning formula throughout the day as the Bruins bested Pullman 8-0, Gonzaga Prep 10-0 and Pullman 3-1 in the finale. Will Kytola and Ryan Chase pitched complete-game shutouts — Chase’s effort was over five innings — and Zeke Palomo yielded just a single run in his seven innings of work against Pullman.
Kytola allowed just one Posse hit in the Bruins’ 8-0 victory over Pullman. He struck out seven and walked two.
Chase limited the Bullpups to two singles. He recorded three strikeouts and walked just one.
And Palomo scattered four Pullman hits. He struck out a pair of Posse batters and worked around three walks.
“I am so impressed and so proud of our pitching and our defense,” Bruins coach Jason Parsons said. “It is not typical in baseball to play three games in a day, and we had to pull if off.
“Our pitchers gave up one run in three games, and we only had two errors in three games. And we turned five double plays.”
Ian Kopf cracked a two-run triple, Joe Terry had an RBI double and Hunter Polley pushed two runs across with a pair of sacrifice flies in the first victory over Pullman. Casey Swanson and Chase contributed a pair of singles each.
Anthony Parish tripled, drove in four runs and scored once to lead the way against Gonzaga Prep. Swanson added a pair of singles, scored twice and drove in a run. And Bobby Holtzinger chipped in with an RBI double.
And in the championship game, Polley doubled and singled, scored once and drove in a run, and Ian Kopf doubled and singled, scored once and knocked in a run. Swanson and Holtzinger each singled in a run and Ethan Zehner added a pair of base hits.
The Bruins travel to Selah, Wash., Saturday to take on the Yakima Valley Peppers in a non-league doubleheader at 5:30 p.m.
Then it’s back to Central Washington American Legion League play next week when they take on the Kennewick Phantoms in a three-game series. The teams will play a single game one week from today at Warriors Field on the Walla Walla Community College campus and complete the series the following day with a twin bill at Roy Johnson Field in Kennewick.
