The wonderful article about Scott Richard, the “Sod God” of Pacific Little League, was appreciated. I’d like to add a note about another contribution Scott made there for many years as an umpire.
I worked the bases for him several times while he squatted down behind home plate, and I can say without reservation that Scott had the most accurate and consistent strike zone I ever observed. He avoided the dread of every Little League home-plate umpire: Calling a “low strike.” His perspective was precise — that was obvious from the field where I was stationed, but it was hard to accomplish when next to a batter who is crouching down himself (and a foot or two shorter than you are).
Kudos to Scott for that offering and, also, for keeping the entire game moving along smoothly!
