Lucille was born in Walla Walla, the younger of two daughters. Her parents were descendants of Germans from Russia who immigrated to Walla Walla in the late 1800s. Her family lived in Germantown, an area southwest of Walla Walla. Her father owned one of the original corner grocery stores, and her parents owned a roller skating rink where Lucille taught international dance skating and children’s beginning figure skating. She was also active in and became head drum major of the Walla Walla Womens Drum and Bugle Corps.
Early on she grew to love German music, especially polkas. On Saturday evenings her family hosted neighbors and friends. They rolled back the living room rug, music makers set up and dancing commenced. Guest of all ages enjoyed the lively evenings. Lucille’s father played the accordion, accompanied by a pianist and fiddler.
Lucille married Patrick C. Nelson and had four children. She worked for the county extension service and later as a legal secretary until retirement in 1991. She was an avid gardener, and amazing crafter, and the life of all parties, the glue to her family. She was loved by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her energetic lust and fun for life will be dearly missed.
Lucille is survived by her daughter, Linda (Doug) Mathews; and many wonderful grandchildren whom she adored beyond measure. She was preceded in death by her three sons, John, Tom, and Don Nelson.
