Sunny-side down

A field of blooming canola explodes with color as the sun breaks through the cloud cover Thursday evening just south of Reser Road.

Staying cool shouldn’t be a problem during the official start of summer today.

Cooler than normal temperatures are expected with a high of about 70 degrees in Walla Walla, a mark roughly 10 degrees below normal. Tonight’s low is expected to drop to a chilly 50 degrees.

The chance of showers today may also break a dry streak stretching back five years. Zero precipitation was recorded in Walla Walla on this date from 2014 to 2018. But 2013 was a different story when storms dropped 0.21 inch June 21. That day was cool with a high of 65, according to the National Weather Service.

The showers are expected to move out tonight and the forecast calls for mostly sunny skies with highs bouncing up to near 80 degrees Saturday and Sunday.
