Former Walla Walla County commissioner Greg Tompkins was chosen this afternoon to fill a vacancy on the board of commissioners.
Tompkins will take the Commission District 3 seat left open by theĀ  death of Commissioner Jim Duncan on Dec. 27.
Tompkins was one of three candidates nominated by the county GOP Central Committee on Jan. 28.
He and fellow candidates Wendi Kregger and Dave Maiden were quizzed by Commissioners Todd Kimball and Jim Johnson during the comissioners' afternoon session.
After meeting in executive session after the interviews, Kimball and Johnson voted to appoint Tompkins to fill the vacant chair, which will be up for election in November.
Tompkins said he intends to run for election in November to fill out the remainder of Duncan's term, which expires in 2022.
After the meeting, Tompkins was sworn in as commissioner by Walla Walla County Superior Court Judge Scott Wolfram.
