MILTON-FREEWATER — Officials have identified a man found dead Monday and found no evidence of foul play.
In a news release issued Monday night, the Umatilla County Sheriff’s office identified the body as that of Marcos Jesus Gutierrez-Rodriguez, 29, of Milton-Freewater. Gutierrez-Rodriguez’ family assisted in identification, the release said.
Guttierez-Rodriguez was found dead and badly burned by the Milton-Freewater Police Department and Milton-Freewater Rural Fire Department when they responded to a fire under the Eastside Road bridge over the Walla Walla River around 1:35 a.m. Monday, according to the release.
The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office investigated the scene and found “earmarks of a campsite, including canned food, cooking and eating utensils and bedding materials,” the release said, and evidence at the scene indicated to investigators that a camp or cooking fire had spread to the place where Gutierrez-Rodriguez was sleeping.
Sheriff’s Office personnel found no evidence suggesting that Gutierrez-Rodriguez’ death was the result of foul play.
