Groundbreaking on a $7.5 million Recreation Center at Walla Walla Community College takes place in a noon ceremony Tuesday.

Construction on the 18,800-square-foot building is scheduled to begin in August with an opening planned for summer 2020 at the space that will provide recreational, meeting and gathering areas for Walla Walla Community College students.

Funding for the project is provided by the students, who voted in favor of assessing an additional $5 per credit hour per quarter over a 20-year period.

Tuesday’s ceremony will take place in the area just outside entrance to the campus bookstore. Speakers include Student Government Association President Rick Aguilar, Walla Walla Community College President Derek Brandes and Tom Golden of NAC Architecture.
