The first major improvement project for the Walla Walla School District was released for bid this week, district officials said.

November’s bond election provided funding for districtwide upgrades, including a new roof and a new heating and cooling system for Berney Elementary School.

The $3.5 million project will replace the work last done more than 40 years ago; construction will begin this summer, officials said.

The work is the first of several projects slated to be released for public bids in the coming weeks, said Superintendent Wade Smith.

“Once we determine the successful contractor, we will be finalizing construction schedules and working closely with staff and parents to coordinate and communicate proactive safety measures,” he said.

The plan is to replace quality with quality and reach the same four-decade life span, Smith said.
