Union-Bulletin Court Report

A teenager originally accused of raping a child, breaking into a home and taking a car in February was sentenced Monday to a lesser charge of attempting to take a car. Original charges against Ruban A. Gaines, 18, stated he went to a home on Abbott Road with a 14-year-old girl on Feb. 17, where the two had sex. Gaines took the keys to a car from the home, according to court records, and drove the girl to a home in College Place. He later returned the car to the home, records stated.

Gaines, who told the court he graduated from Lincoln High School on Monday, was sentenced for second-degree attempting to take a vehicle without permission. The sentence included 364 days in jail, with 334 suspended, 15 days of credit for time served and 120 community service hours; one year of community custody; and $250 in fines and fees.
