A Walla Walla man, already in jail on a first-degree child assault charge, was accused Thursday of first-degree child rape.

Stephan L. Cleveland, 21, was arrested May 7, along with his girlfriend, Jenean A. Lucero, 25, after the woman’s two young children were taken to Providence St. Mary Medical Center on May 6 with multiple injuries police believe were caused by the couple. The pair have been at the Walla Walla County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bail apiece. Their trials were scheduled for June 24.

Cleveland appeared in court Friday on the new charge. His bail was set at $100,000, according to Walla Walla County Prosecutor Jim Nagle. His total bail now is $175,000. Lucero was granted furlough from noon to 5 p.m. Friday to move her belongings, Nagle said.

Details of the rape case are being withheld from publication to protect the identity of the victim.
