MaryJo and Bob Fontenot celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June with their family at a home in Tierra del Mar on the Oregon Coast.
The whole group enjoyed several days of cooking, eating, playing games, hiking, looking at wedding and family pictures and reminiscing about Bob and MaryJo meeting at Louisiana State University inBaton Rouge and about things that happened as their children grew up.
MaryJo and Bob married at Christ the King Chapel on the LSU campus on May 31, 1969. They lived there until 1972, when Bob finished his Ph.D. in mathematics.
They moved to Michigan when Bob took a professor of mathematics teaching position at Oakland University in Rochester. In 1975 they moved to Walla Walla where Bob began a 38-year career as a math professor at Whitman College. He retired in 2013.
MaryJo taught third grade in Baton Rouge. In Michigan she got her master’s degree in teaching of reading. She taught reading to middle and high school students in Umapine for a year, then taught reading to elementary school students in Walla Walla for more than 30 years, retiring in 2009.
MaryJo was a Camp Fire leader for many years for her daughters’ clubs and volunteered in her church. After retiring she has enjoyed taking many Quest courses at Walla Walla Community College and doing Bible study at St. Patrick Catholic Church.
In retirement Bob has taught Quest courses at WWCC and volunteered at St. Patrick Catholic Church and in the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program as a tax preparer, instructor and leader.
The couple’s children and spouses are Barry and Ashley Fontenot of Burbank, Calif., Nikki and Zach Zander of Havre de Grace, Md., and Melissa Francik and partner Joe Pallen of Pullman; and two grandchildren, Dylan and Julian Zander of Havre de Grace.
