MILTON-FREEWATER — A badly burned body was found under a bridge this morning in an area frequented by transients, officials said

Umatilla County sheriff’s deputies and firefighters from Milton-Freewater Rural Fire District received a report about 1:35 a.m. of a fire under the Eastside Road Bridge over the Walla Walla River.

The body was found after the blaze was extinguished. The condition of the body did not allow the person’s identity, sex and race to be determined, said Undersheriff Jim Littlefield. When three fire engines and six firefighters arrived they initially found a pile of wood and trash on fire, he said. The area is known to be an encampment site for people living in homelessness, Littlefield said.

The area has been secured pending further investigation, officials said this morning.
