STRICTLY BUSINESS: The Oasis to go smoke-free Dec. 1

Starting next month the only smoke coming from The Oasis roadhouse restaurant may be from the grill.

HILLHOUSE
The steak-and-seafood restaurant will go smoke-free Dec. 1, one month before the enactment of Oregon's new Smokefree Workplace Law.

Co-owner David Beale said with so many holiday parties expected in December at the restaurant, 85698 Highway 339, it seemed the time was right to enact the ban. He said an alternative area for smokers will be set up outside of the building.

Oregon's Smokefree Workplace Law takes effect Jan. 1 and applies to most public places and workplaces. Those include, but are not limited to: bars and taverns, including bar areas of restaurants, bowling centers, bingo halls, private and fraternal organizations, employee breakrooms, restaurant's private offices, commercial office buildings, retail and wholesale establishments, manufacturing plants and mills, truck stops, child and adult day-care, assisted living facilities, movie theaters, indoor entertainment venues and work vehicles not operated exclusively by one employee. Hotels and motels in Oregon will also be smoke-free except for 25 percent of the rooms designated as smoking by the owner or management.

Luscious by Nature has made a revision to its Recession-Busters menu.

The classic contemporary restaurant, Colville and Alder streets, recently introduced its $10 feel-good dinner menu as a supplement to the regular menu to help customers weather the tough economic times. Owners Daymon Bruck and Ceil Blaine are changing the menu schedule to three days a week. The restaurant is closed Tuesdays. The Recession-Busters will be offered Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 5-9 p.m.

Employees at downtown salon The Beehive have been on the run -- in more ways than one. Stylists Shannon Johnson and Kate McCaw traveled to New York last month for a weeklong work shop at Bumble and bumble. Four more employees are expected to go back for a class in February. Also last month, the business was one of four Walla Walla salons to participate in a "Think Pink" Fair for breast cancer prevention. In November, Wella Colour Educators begins certification classes for the Beehive in Baliage haircolor. The technique mimics color placement in nature and follows an artistic, freehand painting approach to color. Last but not least, three Beehive employees finished a half-marathon in Spokane earlier this month. Johnson, Kyle Barton and Tina Nelson finished within minutes of each other, completing 13.1 miles in just over two hours.
