Officials: Inmate injures officer
The officer is recovering at home today after the alleged assault Thursday morning.

WALLA WALLA -- A Washington State Penitentiary correctional officer is recovering at home today after being assaulted by an inmate Thursday, officials said.

The incident occurred about 8:20 a.m. in the day room area of Housing Unit F, which is in the prison's new west complex, said Joni Aiyeku, prison spokeswoman.

Staff who responded to the incident secured the area within one minute, Aiyeku said. The officer was taken to Walla Walla General Hospital, where he was treated and released.

The inmate struck the officer with fists and no weapons were involved, Aiyeku said. The names of the inmate and officer were not available this morning and the assault was under investigation by the Walla Walla Police Department and Department of Corrections officers.

The housing unit involved was placed on lockdown and was expected to remain that way throughout the weekend. A lockdown requires offenders to remain in their cells where they receive the basic services they would normally move around the facility to receive.

The remaining three housing units in the West Complex Prison are on restricted movement status, Aiyeku said. Restricted movement limits the number of times that offender movement occurs and the number of offenders moving at one time.

" The sergeant that was injured was my father. What I would like to see is some justice against the inmate that assaulted my dad. I want them to do more than slap him on the wrist. Thankfully my father is pretty much completely recovered, and I am thankful to still have him here.

" I just wish that the correct information would be given by the Department of Corrections. Then it would be nice to have the whole truth printed. I don't know if this article is bad information or bad reporting. "
